– My Family & Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. This light hearted and funny book about the early life of Durrell, growing up on Corfu between the wars, changed my life. I wanted to be him, with a bedroom full of rescued wildlife, from turtles to owls, and his adventures in search of wildlife, accompanied by his pet donkey. Pure magic.

– Sapiens: A brief history of mankind by Yuval Noah Harari. I found this book completely fascinating, not least because it helps to put our existence into some kind of perspective, and provides an unusual view on all manner of aspects of our lives and society, from capitalism and money through to our treatment of livestock. I couldn’t put it down.

– Fabre’s Book of Insects by Jean Henri Fabre. I have a copy of this book that is nearly 100 years old, given to me by my father when I was only about 10 years old. It inspired my love for insects, describing the intricate and strange lives of crickets, mantises, butterflies, bees and spiders that Fabre observed on his little patch of land in southern France.
